Sadler

I was very fortunate to spot this delightful teapot in my local charity shop. I just love it!

James Sadler was founded in 1882. James Sadler built a factory in Burslem, Stoke on Trent and made a name for himself by making fine earthenware teapots. He became famous very quickly and a James Sadler teapot became synonomous with quality and good taste.  The first teapots were made using a red clay and had a dark brown glazed surface.

In April 2000 the name and business (but not the works) of Sadler was taken over by Churchill China.

The base of this teapot carries the blue

 Windsor backstamp.

Sadler

A Brown Betty is a type of teapot round and with a manganese brown glaze known as Rockingham glaze.

The original teapots came from a red clay that was discovered in the Stoke-on-Trent area of Britain, in 1695. This clay resulted in a ceramic which seemed to retain heat better and so found use as the material for the teapot as early as the seventeenth century. These early pots were tall and shaped more like coffee pots. In the nineteenth century the pots began to take on the more rounded shape of the modern Brown Betty. The Rockingham Glaze was brushed on the pot and allowed to run down the sides, creating a streaky finish as it was fired.

I bought this teapot from a local charity shop. I was very excited at my purchase and could not wait to use it. I also decided to find out a little bit more about "Sadler". 

James Sadler was founded in 1882. It is one of the leading manufacturers of tea pots in the UK. James Sadler built a factory in Burslem in Stoke on Trent and made fine earthenware teapots. He soon became famous and everyone wanted a Sadler teapot!
These first teapots were made using a red clay with a dark brown glazed surface. These teapots were affectionately known as "Brown Betty". These are still in production today using a more elegant white clay.

He made his name for himself by making fine earthenware teapots an these became synonymous with quality and good taste.

The first teapots were made using a red clay with a dark brown glazed surface. This is known as the Rockingham Brown or more affectionately as "Brown Betty".

This  mark was used from 1947 until Sadler  were taken over by Churchill in 2000.

Sadly in April 2000 the name and business (but not the works) of Sadler was taken over by Churchill China.

Today Sadler teapots come in uniques shapes and designs. They feature wonderful scenes, landmarks, and people of the United Kingdom, making for a great compliment to a nice cup of English tea.
