The Peacock

Most people use term "peacock" to describe both male and female birds, but peacock is actually a name that refers to male peafowl. Peafowl belong to pheasant family. These birds are native to Asia. There are two species of peafowl: Indian Peafowl and Green Peafowl. Both types are endangered because of the habitat loss, smuggling and predators.

The Peacock is a male peafowl and is generally thought to be a symbol of the sun. It is believed that the round tail of the peacock symbolizes heaven and the markings or 'eyes' on the tail are the stars. In Buddhism, the 'eyes' in the peacocks tail is a symbol of watchfulness.

  • Peacock feathers are considered to be unlucky, it is thought the 'evil' eye on the feather will be a symbol of bad luck for the owner
  • The peacock is often used as a symbol of vanity due to its beauty and the way it displays his tail feathers
  • The Peacock's beautiful tail feathers are more than a metre in length!

  1. I love Peacocks, your photos are brilliant. I've never considered them bad luck but I know others do. I guess it depends on your view point, in some parts of the world they are seen as lucky.
