Hamlet Jug

Stunning Large Porcelain Beswick Hamlet Pitcher, Shakespeare Jug, Vintage, Made in England, Circa 1940s - 1950s

This is  a gorgeous vintage Hamlet jug from Beswick Pottery's Shakespeare Jugs collection.  It is marked "Beswick England, 1146" on the bottom. Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest play and one of the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature. It is believed to have been written some time between 1599 and 1602. The play is famous for its ghost, which is depicted on one side of the jug. The inscriptions around the bottom of the jug read, "Hamlet, Be Thou a Spirit of Health" and "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark". The colours of this jug are rich and sumptuous, and the detail is amazing.
